Police Department
The Chocolay Township Police Department was founded in 1963. The priority of that time was resolving dog complaints. By 1966, a police radio was installed in the township car, and by the summer of 1975 the department had purchased its first radar to control excessive speed.
Today the CTPD is a very progressive community orientated department. With five full-time employees and two part-time employees, their place in the criminal justice system is to respond to a variety of complaints within the township, enforce township ordinances and state laws and to assist surrounding emergency departments.
Local Ordinances
The Township has enacted a variety of ordinances for governing the health, safety and welfare of its residence. For a complete list of these ordinances or to review the ordinances, contact the township office.
Animal Ordinance #41
Noise Ordinance #45
Key Tags
CTPD has had many sets of lost keys turned in to them, but most sets are never claimed by the owner. The police department has ordered ID tags for key rings with information on the tag to contact the CTPD if found. Each tag will be numbered and owner information will be maintained at this department to locate the owner.
The ID tags are available at this time and can be purchased at the police department or township office. Cost is $2 for the first ID tag and $1 for each additional tag per family. You do not have to be a Chocolay Township resident to purchase one.

Snowmobile Patrol
DNR Director Humphries signed a land use order in January, 2006 approving a 35 mph speed limit on trail #417 for the 4.5 miles it runs through residential areas in Harvey. Speed limit signs have been placed on the that stretch of trail and will be enforced by the Chocolay Township Police Department. A snowmobile grant was received from the State of Michigan. This year's grant provided for 450 hours of patrol time.
Property Inspections
Aside from routine business and residential patrols, the CTPD also offers private home inspections while you are away. Officers will pay special attention to your property as time permits. Contact our office for more information or to request a home inspection.
