Elected & Appointed Officials
CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP is a Charter Township. In a charter township the Supervisor, Clerk and Treasurer are the officers. In addition there are four trustees making a seven member board. Each member of the Board has one vote on issues on the agenda. Members may not abstain from voting without the consent of the other members.
For the benefit of its citizens and according to state law, the Township Board annually adopts a budget. For the health and welfare of its citizens, the Board adopts or rescinds ordinances as needed. Services and programs of the Township are under the direction of the Board.
The Charter Township of Chocolay Board members are generally responsible for the following functions:

Moderates Meetings
Assures assessor conforms to state law
Serves of Personnel Director
CLERK
Custody of all township records
Accounts for township finances
Oversees all elections
TREASURER
Collects and disperses property taxes for the school,
county and township
Maintains an accounting system that balances with clerk's
books
TRUSTEES
May assume responsibility as directed by the Board
Oversees the functions of the township according to
decisions made at the Township Board Meetings

The Chocolay Township Planning Commission was created in 1974 under Act 168 of 1959, the Michigan Township Planning Act. The Planning Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Township Supervisor with the approval of the Township Board for three-year terms to represent a cross section of interests, including agriculture, recreation, education, public health, government, commerce, transportation, and industry. This Commission serves as an advisory body that provides assistance and advice to the Township Board. The basic duties of the Township Planning Commission are set forth in the following activity's list:
Prepare and periodically amend a comprehensive plan for the development of the Township.
Make studies, investigations and surveys relative to the economic, social, and physical development of the Township.
Formulate plans to make recommendations for the most effective economic, social, and physical comprehensive development.
Cooperate with all departments of Local, State and Federal governments and all public and private agencies concerned with programs directed toward the economic, social, and physical comprehensive development of the Township and seek the maximum coordination of efforts among the various agencies.
Consult with representatives of adjacent Townships in respect to their planning so that conflicts in overall Township plans maybe avoided.
Review zoning amendments, private road applications, lot split applications and subdivision plat review and then provide the Township Board with their recommendations.
Review and act upon Conditional Use Permit Applications.
